English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)

Help with Communication

In our school we are enriched by children from other cultures.  Often English is not spoken in the family so when the child comes to school, help is required to learn English and to help develop the child's competence in literacy and numeracy.

An English as an additional Language or dialect (EAL/D) teacher works in our school as prescribed by Brisbane Catholic Education. This is based on the individual EAL/D needs of the students.  This teacher assists with the development of reading, writing, listening and speaking in English for children whose first language is not English. This teacher may work within the classroom, or may withdraw students for individual or small group support. In every case the EAL/D teacher works collaboratively with the classroom teacher.
